Abstract
Two design features appeal to the need for reflecting the background of the novel. Firstly, the reference to the Malay culture. Aptly represented by square gridded façades which represent the weave pattern of various Malay traditional crafts based on palm and coconut leaves. On some facades, the square panels are alternately pushed out and recessed to reinforce the notion of a weaved surface. Secondly, the dynamic arrangement of the spaces inside the gallery speaks of the freedom of a child growing up in a kampung. The highly cultured society, the landscape and features of a tropical village offer endless possibilities for a child not yet coloured by various cultural dogmas the child has freedom to explore and savour the joy of a simple life. This is also evident in the choice of colours freely applied on the panels without any need to worry about proper combination for harmony, contrast or accentuation.
