Abstract
Freedom and exaggeration seems to be the idea behind this proposal. Freedom is portrayed by taking a form unprecedented around the area. A scaly tubular form is seen snaking its way from the rear of the site towards Jalan Raja Muda. As it nears the main road, the tube splits into two giving the gallery two frontages facing away from each other. The dynamic alignment of the walls does not refer to any existing axis in or around the area. Instead of a single main entrance, the ground floor plan clearly indicates three labels for ‘main entrance’. Vehicular entrance is placed along Jalan Daud thereby, overcoming the problem of traffic coming from Jalan Raja Muda. Two other entrances welcome pedestrians from either direction of Jalan Raja Muda. This is not unlike the architecture of a traditional Malay house, the picture of which becomes the cover of The Kampung Boy. The exterior of the gallery is made of a series of overlapping skins. The gap between each overlap allows subdued daylight to snake its way into the gallery. This reminds visitors specifically about the scene where Lat, as a two year old, being fascinated by a sun spot on the floor, placed a weaved basket in its place with the hope of capturing the sun rays.
