Abstract

In a glance, the building seems totally out of touch with the ambience portrayed by the novel. A series of bulbous spaces are closely placed to form the bulk of the gallery. However, the author extrated four keywords from the novel as the driving forces behind the composition: Imaginative, Inquisitive, Explorative and Creative. In light of these forces, the organic nature of the building most appropriatly responded to the proposed concept. The choice of these ideas obviates the need to portray the abstracted characteristic of a Malay Kampung in the architecture of the gallery. The kampung realm nonetheless, exists in the form of Kampung Baru surrounding the gallery. The gallery instead dwells microscopically on the intellectual and creative development of Lat as a young boy in the kampung. Imaginative, explorative and inquisitive to almost each and every detail, he could possibly be observed in the process of growing up while creative in his portrayal of its meaning in his book.
