Abstract

The proposed scheme addresses the main challenge of designing a structure against the backdrop of an old historical fort amidst the serenity and tranquility of Bukit Melawati. “Contrastingly Harmonising” is a phrase coined to express the design intention. Only by contrasting the historical fort with a modern backdrop will the longevity of the fort be significant. By cleverly interpreting the fort’s design into a modern context, the building will harmonise with its surrounding and void being alien to the very site. The proposed scheme acknowledges the strong presence of remnants from the old fort and created a contemporary structure that seems hovering above the old fort. The contrasting form and texture of the new structure enhance the beauty of this historical fort’s stone masonry structure. The design responds well with the pristine nature of the context by utilising a low ‘hugging-to-earth’ form that respects the endearing longevity of the old fort and thus harmonises well with its surroundings.
