Abstract

“Eyes of Bali” symbolises the conflict regarding development occurring on Bali Island. The lenses of the eyes symbolise how people see Bali Island and its people. In one eye, people see the beauty of natural Bali which is represented by the Frangipani flower. The softness of the flower symbolises the culture of Bali that is entertaining yet fragile. However, in another eye, people see a fragment of keyboard keys symbolising modernism, timelessness and globalisation yet the keys are chaotic. It represent our world today which is without boundaries; promising but full of uncertainty. Visualising Bali and Balineses through the “Eyes of Bali” makes us wonder for which side of Bali should we celebrate and choose? Is it the culture and nature, or the triumph of technology?. We start to question our choice since each preference informs us our individual stand. The “Eyes of Bali” truly forces us to think about who we actually are.
