Abstract

UPM Students’ Complex is a new facility built in UPM and is located next to Faculty of the Modern Language and Communication. However, these two facilities are disconnected by the main road leading towards UPM’s Central Core. Therefore, the challenge is how to connect these two facilities. It is no doubt that the Faculty of Modern Language and Communication will be the prime support facility for the newly built students’ complex because it is the nearest facility. Kim Joe simultaneously solved the technical problem of the site and enhanced the aesthetic and visual problems at both sites. His landscape proposal improves spaces for conducive teaching and learning. Lim Khim Joe in her inventory and analysis identified the problem of disconnection is not only limited between the UPM Students’ Complex and the Faculty of the Modern Language and Communication but also among the spaces within these two facilities. Disconnection is a problem because people or users of both places will be disoriented causing potential decline in utilisation of these spaces. Kim Joe determined to solve the problem of disconnection by introducing the concept of “Green Bonding”. With this concept, she proposed a green link as a spine that connects all landscape spaces. Along this green link, plants and hard¬scapes concept of green link will be seen as unifying factors. In addition, she also proposed new public spaces such as amphithe¬atre, students’ plaza and edible garden. These entire new activities blend with the old activities with the intent to enhance Faculty of Modern Language and Communication’s viability.
