Abstract

Seven landscape proposals located on the campus of Universiti Putra Malaysia have been selected from the LAN3002 Landscape Site Planning Studio course. Among them are at the Faculty of Modern Language and Communication, the Putra Infoport, the Banquet Hall, the Foot 6 Complex, and the New MGSM and the Faculty of Veterinary. The landscape design proposals attempt to maximise the sensitivity of the green areas, while conserving the existing topography designs for that are sustainable and competitive. For the compound at the Faculty of Modern Language and Communication, Idris Mohd Muslim and Lim Khim Joe designed different perspectives which are rather unconventional in dealing with spatial arrangement. A Contemporary concept is well adapted to suit the function of the faculty. Connectivity between the indoor and outdoor spaces of the buildings are also being considered while landscape furniture are designed with due respect to the design concept. At the Putra Infoport, Muhamad Akbar and Syamim Azhari produced a design that manipulates the existing surrounding by maintaining as much green to reflect their ideas. They tried to create a design that is sensitive towards the environment. This explains why the spaces in the building is connected by having more green through linear parks. The buildings are designed to be more environmental-friendly and sustainable. Vehicular circulation and pedestrian has been reformed to ensure the safety of users in addition to keeping the street clean and healthy. At the Banquet Hall, the Food 6 and New MGSM, Esther Soong Hue and Yuen Shang Zhi generated a different approach in determining the spaces for these environments. Esther emphasized on the need and connectivity of spaces in areas that have unique topography. Then, she introduced different levels of terraces for users as people move to experience the variety of spaces from one space to another. Looking from a different perspective, Yuen is more attracted to the idea of maintaining a few unique characteristics of the surrounding to blend well with the topography. All these are to minimize the hazards they bring to the existing terrain and to keep some of the existing plants, for maximizing the level of awareness towards our green environment. For the Faculty of Veterinary, Tan Peng Koon created a different style of contemporary design by trying to adapt the design in its natural environment and later synchronized them for bringing out unity in design. The existing natural environment is fully utilised to include interaction spaces for people and the environment. The spaces that have been designed are commendable as they introduce elements of research that meet the university’s aspiration. Recreational spaces are the main concern to fulfill the needs of students who stay in nearby colleges. Overall, these designs promote healthy spaces that can be enjoyed fully by them. As a conclusion,
