Designing with Principles

Abstract

The selected first year projects are form the Basic Graphic Studio. This course covers the introduction to design, basic design principles as well as design theory. The first objective of the first year projects is to inculcate the student’s creativity in developing ideas. The students’ understanding of the basic design principles is reflected in their artworks in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional forms. Creative and critical development of their ideas went through several discussions and crit sessions. Through these sessions, students were able to express their ideas and experienced the basic design process. Their creativity is further encouraged in presenting their ideas using various media and techniques. The selected projects portray the students’ ability in producing visual graphics and models. This is reflected in the artistic expression of the painting. This exercise allows students to experiment the different basic design principles in their artworks. For the first project, students produced a painting that best represents a design principle. Once they understood the design principle, the second project provide them more freedom to choose and combine two or more design principles in another artwork. The students’ ability to apply various design principles for expressing their ideas and creativities are shown in the hanging sculpture project. For the third project, students produced a model for a theatre stage. The stage design further demonstrates their skills not only in developing a creative idea but also exposing them to space composition. The stage design project starts with the students identifying the theme for the theatre. They were encouraged to do some research on stage design as well as their selected theme. In the model making excercise, the students would combine several design elements such as form, shape, space and colour together with the design principles in creating an interesting space composition. To enhance their understanding about these basic design principles the students final projects were in 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional forms.
