Abstract

Landscape architects are concerned with improving the ways in which people interact with the landscape, as well as with reducing the negative impacts of human uses upon sensitive landscapes. A landscape architect may be involved in urban landscape design and planning, rural and cultural landscape planning, community and regional landscape planning, parks and recreations planning, natural landscape planning, ecological design, historical site design, and interior and exterior garden designs. Therefore, the need for a sound understanding on these matters is essential. The diversity of those areas descibes how the fourth year studio is handled. The students are challenged to undertake a study ,preferably of their interest, and were tasked the whole process of landscape planning and design. A student must demonstrate his or her ability to solve landscape design problems in a comprehensive design process involving a selected site. Identification of site problems and issues, the ability to analyse the situation and to propose creative solutions are assessed. The students’ works cover various areas in landscape architecture field. Cyndy Chang Suet Yee provides a solution to solve disintegration of the physical design in a public park whereas Thy Zhi Yeo tries to improve sustainable campus environment through a more pedestrian-friendly campus scheme. The complexity of the urban landscape and environment sees how some of the works attempt to address these issues. By focussing on Kuala Lumpur City Centre as a tropical city, Edward Lee Kwan Yee presents a creative solution for introducing a conducive environment on urban streets whereas Wong Koon Yew introduces an idea for vertical landscape design as well as a rooftop garden. His proposal gives new dimension to landscape architects to explore. Overall, the projects undertaken by those students have displayed a certain degree of maturity towards issues they discussed and the solutions they proposed. They involve creative thinking processes that encourage students to explore various aspects of landscape planning and design. Their design maturity will be handy when they graduated as landscape architect.
